why did the tsunami get more press then the haiti earthquake?
I just heard about haiti earthquake like a week ago but when the tsunami hit it was everywhere and in every station
I don’t really think that the tsunami received proportionately more coverage, considering that the tsunami affected a geographically larger area and offered certain important lessons not available from the earthquake. There has been a great deal of press about the recent Haitian earthquake. I’ve seen many reports in online news sources and on television, and I think it’s been very widely covered. While the earthquake was certainly a significant tragedy, the majority of the deaths occurred in and around a single city, Port-au-Prince. The Red Cross estimates that the number of deaths was about 50,000, while authorities in Haiti have put the number closer to 200,000.
The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami killed over 230,000 people in fourteen different countries. The unusual nature of the tragedy led to increased coverage; some of the fatalities occurred on the African coast, thousands of miles form the earthquake’s epicenter and hours after the quake. And while tsunamis are common in the Pacific Ocean, a devastating Indian Ocean tsunami came as more of a surprise. In addition, dieing in a tsunami is in certain ways more preventable than dieing in an earthquake, which was another reason for additional news stories. An earthquake is sudden, and there has been little success in predicting earthquakes. Tsunamis, on the other hand, arise from earthquakes and must travel to the areas that will ultimately be affected. Thus, once an earthquake has occurred, there is an opportunity to warn the people who might be affected by a tsunami. The Indian Ocean tsunami led to improved tools for warning the residents of those coasts about potential tsunamis. The Haitian earthquake, while tragic, didn’t really teach us anything. It was already known that Port-au-Prince lay on a fault line and that the nation lacks building codes due to a total failure of the government.
