china earthquake death tolls
Why are natural disaster death, injury, and missing tolls much higher in other countries?

Why is it that when natural disasters happen in other countries that they have a much higher death toll than the same thing that happens in the USA? I never really understood why. We’re all people and natural disasters are, well, natural and can happen anyway. Just look at the earthquake that happened in China with a death or missing toll of 18,000 (currently) but when an earthquake in California happens it’s like in the hundreds if that. It’s the same with floods. Flood in Myanmar = 1000s. Flood in the Midwest = 10s. (if that). Someone, help me to understand what’s going on here.

It’s just a matter of dumb luck. We’ve been EXTREMELY lucky that a major disaster hasn’t happened lately. It’s just a matter of time before we are struck with a really major one though. It could range from a monster hurricane hitting the northeast, a tsunami maybe hitting the west coast, or just the big quake that eventually WILL hit southern California, or in the mid west.

The death toll from China’s earthquake continues to rise
