Do you think it was ignorant of this kid to tell me this?
I’m american but my parents are haitian, as you all have heard of the massive earthquake that hit haiti a couple days ago. Well i wanted to help out so at my school we have been collecting clothes and money and things that will go to the red cross for the people in Haiti. Well it made me really mad a when a kid said ” why should we (americans) be helping the People in haiti, but when stuff happens to us no one tries to help us??” i told him (maybe a little too harshly) that these people don’t have all the things we do, we are talking about people who were already in poverty way before the earthquake here, he is just very ungrateful, i’m so glad my parents taught me better than that. But what do you think, do you agree with him?
I’m glad your parents taught you better than that too! Honestly, because he is a kid, he was probably just repeating the values that are taught in his home- selfishness, ungratefulness, and ignorance toward the rest of the world. I’m not making excuses for him, but the sad reality is he is a reflection of the way he is raised, just like your parents efforts to teach you love and respect are shown in the way you are able to see the situation the Haitians are in right now and want to make a difference.
You’re doing good! You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders. Don’t pay much attention to people like this- there are SO many in the world. Be grateful for the family you have and the values they are raising you with. They really have a child to be proud of!
