Why do so many people keep thinking the end is near?
The more technology we have to listen to others, the more and more doomsday predictions occur. Why are people so obsessed with doomsday? I am 26 years old and I have heard a few in my lifetime and there are more out there. If 2012 doesnt work, there are more backed up to be set in place. y2k, halle bop comet, 9/11, etc etc. Why are people so obsessed with doomsday? Everytime something happens, they say its a sign that the end is near. They even said it when Titanic sank in the early 1900s. Now that the Haiti earthquake happend its a doomsday sign.
Wow, it is hilarious to me how many people believe it. It’s just a conjunction of astronomical objects, and it’s supposed to be a *point* on a continuing *cycle* of the Mayan calendar. Why do they believe the world is going to cease to exist (!) ? Because end times prophecies allow people to believe that they live in an important time, and that their death will be significant and noticeable to god… in other words, it’s exciting. It makes people feel more alive. And at the same time, imagining the world’s imminent end makes us a lot more able to put our day to day suffering in perspective, as well as making us more apathetic about solving the world’s problems – because after all, it’ll be over soon anyway so why worry! We don’t have to be responsible! All we gotta do is pray.
No, the world won’t end in 2012, just like it didn’t end in 2001. There’ll probably be a lot of big changes, though, maybe in part because people DO believe so much. Frankly I’m a bit concerned for our kids, considering that people with their finger on the proverbial nuclear button might even buy into (or be selling) this end times BS.
