How can we Predict and Prepare for earthquakes?
Predict: not yet possible. Scientists can detect minor quakes that sometimes lead up to more major tremors, but they don’t know exactly when, exactly where, or even if something will happen. Similarly, massive quakes can occur without warning.
Preparation is simpler: if you are in earthquake prone area (or even outside one, if you want to be really safe, quakes can (rarely)happen anywhere), make sure you have an emergency kit accessible, make sure you have all you need to survive for several days until help arrives. Buildings in those areas are more and more built to earthquake resistant standards, older buildings are being upgraded in many cases. But nobody can say with certainty that ANY building will survive a massive enough quake, all we can do is be ready for one when it happens.
